Egret is an ideal location for those who seek a truly restful and relaxing place to be. It is located at Lasseters Landing, just six miles outside the village of Columbia (population 900) in Tyrrell County (population 5,000). Columbia is the last town you reach before getting to the Outer Banks towns of Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. Our lovely town has 3 restaurants, a library, a great visitor’s center, and the county is home to thousands of acres of preserved wetlands, including the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and Educational Center on the Scuppernong River. Egret is about 45 minutes west of Manteo and the Outer Banks and all the many offerings there, from movies to shopping to dining to hang gliding to kayak tours and so much more. The area around the cottage is perfect for kayaking, canoeing (both right from the door if you bring your own), bird watching, hiking, bicycling (miles of flat roads to enjoy), fishing (from our own pier) or deep sea fishing (try Pirates Cove Charters), visiting historic plantations (Somerset Place and Hope Plantation, to name a few), museums (like the North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island), gardens (the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island), plays (The Lost Colony has been running for 70 years at the Roanoke Island Festival Park) and viewing wildlife - from egrets, herons, ospreys, pelicans and the endangered red cockaded woodpecker, to deer, turtles, and if you are lucky a black bear or a red wolf. And that’s just to start the list of possibilities. Go to our Area Links page to find direct links to calendars, natural wildlife areas, fishing and more. |
